Sir Roy GardnerBy Alison Hojbjerg • Mar 6th, 2005 • Category: People, Quinta Lifestyle
Sir Roy Gardner is Chief Executive of Centrica plc, which trades in Britain under the British Gas and Onetel brands. A true Captain of Industry, He is also Chairman of Manchester United plc and sits on the boards of various national charities and industry bodies. Sir Roy is a fan of the Algarve and a property owner in Quinta do Lago.
Sir Roy began his career at the British Aircraft Corporation where he worked in the Commercial Aircraft Division. As a Certified Accountant with a technical background, he worked his way through aerospace, defence and telecommunications industries before joining British Gas as Executive Director, Finance, in 1994.
Having seen the company through its demerger in 1997, he now heads Centrica plc which encompasses a range of activities in Britain, North America and Europe.
A keen golfer and runner, he has raised money for a number of charities by running marathons – and even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 1999. He is Chairman of Manchester United plc, one of the world’s leading football clubs.
With such a long, successful career behind him, it is a wonder that Sir Roy has any time left over for his family, but about 20 years ago he brought his wife and children to Carvoeiro for a holiday – and that is where the love affair with the Algarve started. Since then he has returned on many occasions and has come to know the region well and to enjoy it.
A man such as Sir Roy could choose to have a holiday home anywhere: what was it that attracted him to the Algarve?
“The access is easy, the climate is great and I have a number of friends and colleagues who have homes here,” he explains. Like so many others who have found their ideal hideaway here, he also mentions the consistently good weather, the friendly people, wonderful beaches and – last but not least – the outstanding golf courses.
A keen golfer – when time permits – he has played many of the courses in the Algarve, from Penina eastwards. It was during his various exploration trips of the region that he discovered Quinta do Lago, where he has since enjoyed not only the golf courses but the local restaurants and the hospitality at the Quinta do Lago hotel.
Sir Roy has just bought a villa in Quinta do Lago, with the help of Quinta Properties. It will be a holiday base for him and his family – and he says the family will use it “frequently”, even if he can’t make it!
What made him decide to work with Quinta Properties when he wanted to buy a property here?
“Strong recommendations from others who have used their services,” he says without hesitation, “I would commend their personal attention, availability when required and their understanding of their clients’ requirements. They act in their clients’ interests, and they have excellent attention to detail.”
From a businessman such as Sir Roy, this is praise indeed. Does he have any advice to anyone else thinking of buying a property in Quinta do Lago?
“Be clear about the type of property you want and level of investment you are prepared to make,” he says, “and use Quinta Properties.”
