2016 is being described as a very successful year for Portugal´s tourism. During the first half of the year there have been 8.5 million tourists in the country showing an increase of 10,2% compared to 2015.
June has been the best month with a record of 1.9 million tourists in Portugal. Both foreigners and national tourists contribute to this increase, where British holidaymakers make up the bulk of the percentage followed on by Germans and then French.
Lisbon and the Algarve are the most popular destinations for tourists within Portugal.
With this Hoteliers and restaurateurs where able to create more jobs especially in the Algarve region which now has the lowest unemployment rate in Portugal (8.1%). Although this may be due to a very busy summer, the region is focusing on becoming a year long tourism destination.
Compared to last year the number of tourists is growing every month and it is expected to continue to do so. Thereby 2016 will become the best tourism year ever in the Algarve.
