Algarve is the southernmost province of Portugal. It features some of Europe’s best sandy beaches but also offers a lot more, from medieval towns and fishing villages to open-air markets, world championship golf courses, fresh food, local wine, and much, much more.

Specifically, here’s why Portugal’s Algarve qualifies as not only a top retirement option in Europe, but, in fact, the world’s best retirement choice:

Great weather, the region enjoys one of the most stable climates in the world and over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, meaning more sunny days than almost anywhere else in Europe.

Safety, Portugal ranks as the 17th safest country in the world.

International-standard health care. Medical tourism is a growing industry, with many private clinics recently opening in the area as well as 2 private hospitals.

Golf, the region boasts over 30 courses and is recognized as a top golfing destination in continental Europe. Several of the golf courses have won international awards in the last few years.

Unbeatable sandy beaches. The Algarve’s coastline boasts extensive sandy beaches, many awarded Blue Flags from the European Blue Flag Association. Most beaches have lifeguards during the summer season. Many also have restaurants or snack bars, open in the summer season.

The cost of living in Portugal is among the lowest in Europe.

Healthy living and eating. Fresh fish of great variety is available in all the daily markets, as well as, fresh fruit and vegetables. All produce is grown locally due to its favourable climate.

Thanks to several tax incentives, retirement income is not taxed. Recent legislation allows resident foreign retirees to receive pension income in the country tax-free.

Recently the Algarve was voted in the top 25 destinations by Bloom consulting in the business, tourism and quality of living categories.
