Association for Foreign Residents and Property owners in Portugal – AFPOPBy Lina Rodrigues • Aug 19th, 2009 • Category: Property News & Info
AFPOP was founded in Portugal in 1987 when the Portuguese property business was booming and legislation was changing at a bewildering rate.
The Association’s principal aim was to keep foreign residents and visitors abreast of the new laws and the pitfalls of real estate activity.
AFPOP continues to be administered and operated by an unpaid Management Council supported by volunteer local Area Event Organisers all with first hand experience of situations for those living in Portugal or planning to do so.
AFPOP currently has a membership of around 6,200, testimony to the way the Association has filled the needs identified by its founders. This membership is predominantly English speaking with significant German, Dutch, and Scandinavian representation.
AFPOP recognises its primary role to be the dissemination of useful information to its members. A regular newsletter produced in English and German keeps members all over the world informed of new developments and changes in legislation in Portugal. Our experienced office staff offers information and advice in person at our Portimão office. Communication by letter, fax, email or phone receives a timely and professional response.
AFPOP provides its members with introductions to specialists in legal, building, investment and taxation fields who are prepared to offer members service on a preferred basis, through our Strategic Alliance programme.
AFPOP has negotiated a member’s discount scheme with local traders, a specially designed insurance scheme on house and car insurance and discounted rates with leading healthcare organisations. The resultant savings can far outweigh the cost of membership, and importantly will allow you to make the most out of living and working in Portugal. AFPOP’s Service Directory lists these and other service providers, including medical and legal professionals, who are able to offer assistance in English, German and other European languages.
