The award, which has come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s highest honor, is modeled on the Nobel Prize. Souto de Moura joins the distinguished company of previous Pritzker laureates such as Frank Gehry and Sir Norman Foster.

Souto de Moura is the designer of an award-winning Quinta do Lago villa, Casa Quinta do Lago, which was built in 1988. The modern, design-led villa fronts the golf course fairway of the prestigious Quinta do Lago South Golf Course and is now for sale through Savills Quinta Properties in the Algarve for Euro 2.57 million.

The villa’s unique design reflects a European style, vernacular architecture and was inspired by the Portuguese-Oriental flavour of Macau.  Many of the property’s six bedrooms, three of which are ensuite, maintain direct access to the garden and swimming pool.

The distinguished jury that selected the 2011 Pritzker Laureate is led by chairman, Lord Palumbo, the internationally known architectural patron of London, chairman of the trustees, Serpentine Gallery, former chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain, former chairman of the Tate Gallery Foundation, and former trustee of the Mies van der Rohe Archive at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Pritzker Prize jury chairman, The Lord Palumbo, spoke from his home in the United Kingdom, quoting from the jury citation that focuses on the reasons for this year’s choice: “During the past three decades, Eduardo Souto de Moura has produced a body of work that is of our time but also carries echoes of architectural traditions.” And further, “His buildings have a unique ability to convey seemingly conflicting characteristics — power and modesty, bravado and subtlety, bold public authority and a sense of intimacy —at the same time.”

Upon learning that he was being honoured, Souto de Moura had this reaction: “When I received the phone call telling me I was to be the Pritzker Laureate, I could hardly believe it. Then I received confirmation that it was actually true, and I came to realize what a great honour this is. The fact that this is the second time a Portuguese architect has been chosen makes it even more important.”

The purpose of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which was founded in 1979 by the late Jay A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy, is to honour annually a living architect whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture. The laureates receive a $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion. The 2011 prize will be presented in Washington DC in June.

In a boon to homeowners in holiday resorts, such as Quinta do Lago, the figures showed that the tourism industry in Portugal saw a 12.1% increase in spending in 2010 – generating almost six billion euros in the first nine months of the year.

This was well up on figures for 2008 and 2009, which were considered stellar years for tourism in the country. In fact, tourism’s financial performance was 44 million euros more than in 2008.

According to the bank, foreign tourists contributed to almost half of the total returns in 2010.  The Dutch spent 20% more than they did in 2009; English tourists spent 12.5% more than the previous year, while Germans spent 11.8% more euros in Portugal in 2010 when compared to the previous year.

“Much has been said in the press about the law regarding the registration of bore holes and septic tanks.

This law was introduced in May 2007 under Decree-law 226-A/2007 but which has not been properly publicised until now. The law is based on a European Directive and aims to register all water resources in the country by legalising all water provision and disposal devices, which are not currently registered.

Under the law, all means of taking of water or disposing of waste water are required to be registered at Administração da Região Hidrográfica (ARH). This registration as far as it concerns septic tanks (fossas) applies only where the fossa is designed to empty into the water table or soil. Homes which have a septic tank that is emptied by bowser or other service are not affected under this legislation.

Besides the septic tanks and bore holes, if you have on your property: springs, rivers (any size) dams (barragens) reservoirs, lakes, ponds, wells etc., not yet registered and licensed you must also complete this registration before the end of May 2010.

Water storage such as cisternas and closed septic tanks that do not drain into the soil are not affected by this law.

Swimming pools have a license of their own and are not affected by this law.

The initial deadline for registration under this law was 31st May 2009. However, due to the ARH offices being inundated with applications, the Government decided to extend this deadline until 31st May 2010. Therefore, all requests for licensing must be completed by then.

Last year there was a report published in the newspapers that the registration of bore holes was only necessary for those with pumps over 5wp. We have contacted ARH and they have confirmed that the information for ALL water supplies is necessary; therefore, our advice to Members is that you should register your bore hole or septic tank to avoid any future problems.”
